A pool of dust 💨

What looks like a distant, dark lake is actually a pooling of darker dust near the Gediz Vallis Ridge, which NASA's Curiosity Rover finally reached in August. From the 136 pictures taken there, scientists stitched together a stunning panorama shot - part of which you can see here! However, landing your rocket right here on Mars may not give you the exact same view: According to NASA, "[t]he color has been adjusted to match lighting conditions as the human eye would see them on Earth".

While technical aspects of our wind-driven Tumblew

While technical aspects of our wind-driven Tumbleweed Mars rover are highly important to investigate, we must of course also research what results we aim to get from the mission.

For example, by collecting weather data on the Red Planet, we achieve insights into ionizing radiation and carbon dioxide cycles. This is highly valuable information for future missions, as ionization can destroy biological material and damage electronic components. The required scientific experiments and measurements are further detailed in one of our #IAC2023 papers, which our incredible science team submitted this week!

Ever since some of our members - including One and Austin - visited the IAC 2022 in Paris last year, we knew that we couldn't miss the next one. While it's almost another month until we get to present our work in Baku, this Friday is the deadline for our papers. This means all throughout the team, members are busy with concluding their research and finishing up their papers. We can't wait to share the results with you - and of course, we will keep you posted here on Instagram!

Take a look, what do you see? 👁

What may seem like a portal to a different world or human iris are actually the remains of a star shedding its outer layer toward the end of its life: the Ring Nebula. The #JamesWebbSpaceTelescope recently created new images of the stunning planetary nebula 2,500 light-years away.
These images also help demonstrate why astronomers can learn much more about an object by observing it in different wavelengths. The first image was taken with Webb's #NIRCam in near-infrared wavelengths. These are especially suited to show the detailed central structures in a region of hot gas. The second slide shows the Ring Nebula captured in the mid-infrared wavelengths using Webb's #MIRI, with intricate radial features in the outer areas. Even long after the initial event, the structures' composition and distribution allow researchers to collect information about the central star that caused them.

On its travels across the Red Planet, our wind-dri

On its travels across the Red Planet, our wind-driven Tumbleweed Mars rover will need to relay commands and large amounts of information from and to the Martian surface. For this, we need to develop an antenna architecture to fit this unique type of rover and the mission.
Current design challenges include insufficient realized antenna gain, potential interference with structural elements, and mechanical damage. These are addressed in some of our work for the #IAC2023 in Baku this October. We hope to see you there for the presentation of our results!

As the Tumbleweed rover rolls across the Martian surface, it gathers large amounts of valuable data. However, this data also has to find its way back to us on Earth! 🌍

Researching and developing a suitable system is an essential part of our path to Mars. As our final project introduced in this cycle, our 8th project team is tasked with the development of the Transmit and Receive Module (TRM) under the supervision of our Head of Electrical & Software Engineering Felix Abel. The TRM handles the communications of the Tumbleweed rover and will transmit all the data gathered during the mission - which is essential for scientific analysis - as well as receive commands from Earth. A big thank you to our members working on this important task!
